The Crown at Wergs site is steeped in local history and the area’s main claim to historical fame is the battle of Tettenhall that took place in 910 where the Saxon forces of Edward the Elder defeated a large force of raiding Vikings. This battle was mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1086, being second only in importance to The Battle of Hastings in 1066.
